Addressing other experts who participated in the workshop, Dr. Sakthivel Vaiyapuri, Associate Professor in Cardiovascular & Venom Pharmacology at University of Reading, UK explained that snakes played an important role in biodiversity while balancing eco-systems, naturally.

“It is the need of the hour to protect snakes. There are over 300 species of snakes and among them about 60 species are venomous. To clear the myths surrounding snakes, it is the need of the hour to create awareness about them," added the doctor while commenting on the need for the virtual workshop. He also pointed out that about 5 million snake bites and 1,00,000 deaths are reported every year.
