Chandran who hails from Tiyagi Kumaran Nagar, Velampalayam, Tirupur who was a contract worker at the North Taluk office tried to set himself on fire by pouring petrol on himself from a 3 litre petrol can that he had brought with him. The police on duty at the Collectorate detained him.

During police investigation at the South Police Station, Chandran stated that the immolation bid was due to his brother Kumar who had beaten and cheated his mother Dhanalakshmi, usurping assets worth Rs. 50 lakhs. He added that his repeated complaints to the police were in vain and hence he had decided to immolate himself in front of the District Collectorate so that his brother would be arrested and appropriate action would be initiated to recover the property.
