Inspections in Coimbatore and Palakkad border areas to monitor violation of rules ahead of assembly election
Coimbatore: As the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and Kerala set to take place on April 6, vehicles will be allowed in the border areas of Coimbatore, Palakkad and Thrissur only after a thorough check to monitor violation of election rules.
Inspections have been intensified at nine check posts in the Coimbatore district bordering the state of Kerala, namely at Walayar, Mulli, Melpaviyoor, Velandapalayam, Veerappagavundanur, Gopalapuram, Meenatchipuram, Valukkupparai and Anaikatti. Security has been beefed up to prevent the transfer of election gifts, including cash and liquor.
District election officials said, "90 flying squads have been set up in Coimbatore district and intensive vehicle inspections have been carried out and undocumented cash, gifts and liquor are being confiscated. Intensive inspections are being carried out in the border areas of Palakkad and Thrissur districts of Kerala. Not only the main checkpoints but also the routes crossing the border in various ways are being monitored. The inspections are being conducted in collaboration with police, revenue and forest department officials."
