World Forest Day: Students from Vellore take part in awareness session conducted by Iyarkai foundation in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: The UN observes March 21 as the International Day of Forests to commemorate the green cover around the world and stress its importance. With the theme “Forest restoration: a path to recovery and well-being”, the international forest day was observed here in the city by Iyarkai Foundation.

Various programs including increasing green cover, creating nurseries and lectures on importance of forests were emphasised to the students of Horticulture department of Aadhi Parasakthi College in Vellore. The session witnessed District Forest Officers stressing on the need to protect and revive our ecosystems.

As proved, sustainable management of forests can help address climate change and biodiversity crisis, told C. Dinesh Kumar, Assistant Conservator of Forest who was the chief guest for the event. He also briefly spoke on fostering farming and thereby creating an economic activity that creates jobs and improves lives.



Throwing light on green cover project, Forest Range Officers (FRO) Subbu Raj and Former FRO Dominic stressed to the students on the ecosystem and importance of all types of forests. They encouraged the students to efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree-planting campaigns.

Meanwhile, Vinod Raj, Director of Iyarkai Foundation touched base on creating a rapport between forest, farmers and tribal development. Imparting the students with the knowledge of creating nurseries ans saplings, Sharmila and Priyadarshini from the forest department showed a live demonstration of the same.



As a token of appreciation, all participants were provided with certificates, seed balls and saplings.



Among the guests were Former Forest Social Officer, Madhivanan, NGO trustees Ramalingam and Arunbalan.
