Anjaneya Colony residents boycott elections as they have no public toilets
Coimbatore: The public has announced that they will boycott the upcoming 2021 election due to the lack of toilet facilities in their area. The residents of Anjaneya Colony in Ondipudur area from Coimbatore district have announced that they will boycott the assembly elections as they do not have accessible public toilets in the area.
The residents also said that they have decided to do so because even after several petitions to officers including the District Collector, District Tahsildar and Legislator, to build public toilets in the Singanallur constituency had not been met.
Chandru, a youth living in the area said, "There are 250 families living in the Anjaneyar Colony, which comes under the Singanallur constituency. People here, including young women and the elderly, defecate in the open due to the lack of public toilets. This causes various problems including where the women are videotaped and threatened."
Chandru added that they continue to demand the construction of public toilets in the area to rectify these problems. "The residents here live in a house about 1.45 cents in size and accommodates two-three families. In this condition, it is impossible to construct separate toilets for each household. Therefore, the government should seize private land in the surrounding area and built adequate public toilets for us," he said.
Chandru also commented that candidates from the earlier elections promised to establish toilets but did not fulfill our demand. So the residents have now decided to boycott this election. It is to be noted that there are a total of 1500 voters residing in the area.
