Coimbatore: Works to administer medicinal spray for tea plants to combat drought intensified by the tea estate management in Valparai. Tea is cultivated in Valparai covering an area of about 30,000 hectares. There are more than 50,000 workers dependent on the tea estates. With the onset of summer in Valparai and due to insufficient rainfall this year, the tea plants have started wilting and severely affecting tea production.

To help tea plants to withstand the drought, the tea estate management has been spraying copper on the tea plants using modern machinery. These sprays are administered three times a day in the morning, afternoon and evening. Due to this, the owners of the tea estates said that the wilting of tea plants has been controlled. Sprinkler watering mechanism is also installed in a few estates.
