Senior Journalists in Coimbatore district have welcomed DMK's election manifesto announcement assuring to establish welfare board for Journalists.

Senior Journalists in Coimbatore district have welcomed DMK's election manifesto announcement assuring to establish welfare board for Journalists.

A day after announcing the list of candidates for the upcoming elections to be held on April 6, DMK President Stalin has released a comprehensive manifesto. As claimed by DMK, the manifesto has been carefully curated to meet the needs of all sections of the society - public, MSMEs, women, educational sector, health care, agriculture, investments, economic growth among others.

And, one such point in DMK's manifesto of establishing "Welfare Board", for journalists has been well-received by the media fraternity who opine that "its a long pending demand by the journalists of Tamil Nadu."

"There is no job security or any other special schemes to aid journalists after they are out of their jobs or due to issues like lay offs. The pension scheme which is presently implemented also has many issues. The income limit of Rs 1 lakh per year does not suit the present situation. Mostly those who fulfill this criteria are able to avail the pension of Rs 4,000 per month by influencing various political party leaders, government officials etc. Hence, only very few journalists benefit from the pension", jointly said two Senior Journos from Coimbatore

They added that the government should consider increasing both the pension and income slab criteria.

Several journos also pointed the need of job security, as even senior journalists who have worked for several years in an organisation are left jobless due to sudden lay offs. In such scenarios, the plight of the journos are worrisome, they noted.

"The announcement made by DMK in their election manifesto of setting up Welfare Board for Journalists should provide some kind of job security and ensure rights of the journos. Hence we welcome this announcement." informed another Senior Journalist from the district.
