Botanical Garden of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University renovated after a year and made open for public


Coimbatore: Inauguration of the Botanical Garden of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, which was renovated after a year has been opened to public.



Dr. BK Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, President, Bharat Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore was the special guest and inaugurated the Botanical Garden.



Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vice Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, said that the botanical garden, which had been inactive for a year, has now been renovated and opened to the public. He also said that it was his dream to make the university garden one of the best botanical gardens in the world and asked students to visit the botanical garden in Europe which has several thousand species of plants at least once in their lifetime.

Later, he said the visiting time of the botanical garden has been extended to 8pm for public use and it has been decided to open at 7amfor a walk for the elderly in the morning and a snack shop will be set up for the general public. BK Krishnaraj Vanavarayar spoke on environmental protection and asked on behalf of the university to create awareness among the people about it.



He said that protecting the environment was not an important thing a hundred years ago but the reason we are currently fighting hard to protect our environment is because of the improper handling of technologies. He said that with the support of science we need to protect natural resources and students should engage in activities that they can to protect the environment.

District Collector K. Rajamani said the park would be more than just a public park and it would be a botanical garden and a place for conservation of rare plants. The 113-year-old Botanical Garden of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University was inactive for various reasons and is now being renovated and opened to the public.

He said it covers an area of 47.7 acres and the park is home to more than 800 plant species and there are plans to preserve more in the future. He added that the botanical garden is divided into four parts including the herb garden, the children's garden, the symmetrical garden, the aromatic garden and different types of plants are on public display.

He said that QR technology cards were attached to the plants to make it easier for the public to know the names of different types of plants and that the names of the plants could be known using them with the help of a normal mobile camera.

The Botanical Garden is home to hundreds of aromatic plants, including Nithya malli, inji pul, and Dusty Miller, as well as more than a hundred herbaceous plants, including kumal maram, pulichai, Muyalkathilai and Murugotti. He said security measures were being taken for the safety of the public and the works would be completed soon.
