The Nilgiris: Ahead of the state assembly elections in Tamilnadu, Election Commission officials in The Nilgiris are involved in added surveillance at the Mountain Rail Service from Ooty to Mettupalayam.

Officers are conducting searches for cash, gift items and other things which are illegally brought to distribute to the public in exchange for votes. Passengers are allowed to leave the railway station premises only after thorough checks of luggages.

A surveillance team of 27 members are involved in random checks across The Nilgiris district. Since The Nilgiris is a popular tourist destination, Officials are now involved are on the lookout for people who carry money for elections posing as tourists.
Hence the security and surveillance has been tightened at the district level of The Nilgiris.

Election Officials in The Nilgiris say that " Around 52,02,450 worth of undocumented gift items have been seized from 28th February till March 1st nightfrom the areas of Ooty, Coonoor and Gudalur." They said.
