Local residents have raised alarm and rejected the new corporation program which plans to enrich the underground water with filling it with treated factory water.
Coimbatore: The local residents are against the Corporation and Minister’s plan to let a project which does not even work for 3 months, to fill underground water.
Coimbatore Corporation had planned to use the treated sewage water from a wastewater treatment plant located in Ondipudur to fill up over 60 ponds in Chettipalayam using pipes.
The inauguration of the process began two days back at the Kadukuttai area in Chettipalayam. This project which plans to enrich the underground water has been rejected by the farmers and the public of the area.
Public and farmers of the area are protesting against the new project and are rejecting the plan as they say that the sewage water treatment plant in Ondipudur is not functioning even for 3 months in the year. They also mentioned about the enrichment program done to the Sulur ponds which has made the underground water go bad and now the people and farmers of Kannampalayam, Pallapalayam are not able to use the underground water. With this reference the public are requesting the corporation not to carry on this project which will damage the ecosystem and the underground water in the Sultanpet and Chettipalayam.
As an alternative the public and farmers have suggested a new plan to enrich the underground water using water from Parambikulam - Azhiyaruwhich is located at a distance of 26 kilometres. The farmers say that by this method both the underground water is enriched along with no change to the character of the water.
With the government's new scheme over 10 pond's in the Pattanam area is said to be affected and the local residents are against it.
A residents meeting was held last Sunday at Nagamakkampalayam to discuss the issue regarding the enrichment of water issue. At the end of the meeting the public decided that they don't want to fill up the ponds in their area with sewage water and petitioned about the issue to the district collector.
The people are perfectly fine to enriching the pond using rainwater but now the improperly treated sewage water.
The residents allege that the farmers and the public are highly affected in the areas where the waters have already gone bad with no hope of reusing the underground water.
