Rekla Race held in Pollachi after 8 months!

Rekla Race, a traditional bull race popular in the Kongu Belt like Jallikattu which is popular in the southern districts of TamilNadu.


Coimbatore:Rekla Race, is a traditional bull race popular in the Kongu Belt like Jallikattu which is popular in the southern districts of TamilNadu.

The farmers in the western areas of Tamilnadu, enroll their Kangeyam bulls to participate in the renowned Rekla Race every year as a part of tradition and also to bring an awareness among the present generation on the rich heritage.

Rekla Race has not been conducted for the last 8 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. With the Pongal festival to happen very soon, the Rekla Race which has active enthusiasm and participation of Kangeyam bulls.



The Rekla Race is all set to happen in and around the villages of Pollachi. Rekla Race happened today in Samathur and Manalmedu near Pollachi.

The bulls were classified into 2 categories and the race distance was divided based on that. Two teeth bulls were given a distance of 200 meters, while the 4 teeth bulls were given a distance of 300 metres.

As the bulls actively participated, a large crowd from surrounding areas were present to witness the Rekla Race. Harming the bull of any kind was strictly restricted by the authorities and special CCTV cameras are being used to have a closer look.

The farmers from the surrounding areas visited the race today and requested the government to take initiative for conducting these races.
