Coimbatore: A Series of jewellery theft targeting women has caused fear among all women in Coimbatore.
The incidence of chain robbery among women who are walking alone has been on the rise in Coimbatore city areas for the past few days. This has created a situation where women are afraid to go out wearing jewellery. Sivagami (45), a resident of 9th Street, Crosscut Road, Gandhipuram, Coimbatore, was watering in front of her house when a young man who came that way snatched the one and a half sovereign gold chain worn around Sivagami's neck. Shocked by this she shouted and those who were walking on the road grabbed the young man and later handed him over to the Kattoor police.
The police investigation revealed that the youth was from Bharathi nagar, Kavundampalayam. He said he snatched the chain due to hardships in his family. Police are continuing to investigate him. Similarly, Krishnamurthy, his wife Pushpa (60) is from Ayyasamy Kovil Road. She was walking after eating at around 10 pm when two teenagers on a motorcycle snatched the 5 sovereign gold chain around Pushpa's neck in the blink of an eye. Shocked by this, Pushpa lodged a complaint with the Big Bazaar street police.
Police have filed a case and are looking for the boy who snatched the 5 sovereign gold chain and escaped. Women are all too scared to walk on the road as there are constant chain-snatching incidents targeting women. Chain snatching injures the neck and the consequent falling to the ground, bruises the entire body. So the public has urged that police should punish the robbers so that women can go out without fear.
