Forest department intensifies efforts to capture leopard using a cage to keep a check on leopard movement in Mettupalayam


Coimbatore: Forest department has intensified efforts to capture a leopard using cage to keep a check on leopard movement in Mettupalayam. The Chennimalai Karadu is located in the Sirumugai Wildlife Reserve near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district. Mothepalayam and Arivoli Nagar are adjacent to the Chinnamalai Karadu Forest.

Leopard movement is verycommon in this area. The leopard from the Chennimalai Forest strayed into the farms and the villages and killed several sheep, cows and dogs. In the last few days the people of the area became aware of the presence of leopards in the Chinnamalai area and became very frightened.

Following this, the forest department engaged in intensive surveillance as the villagers appealed to the Sirumugai Forest Department to capture the leopard. As the presence of leopards was confirmed, a cage was placed near the Chennimalai Karadu forest yesterdayunder the supervision of Sirumugai Forest Officer Senthilkumar on the instructions of District Forest Officer Venkatesh and on the orders of Coimbatore Zone Additional Chief Forest Officer Anwardeen.

The forest department is in close surveillance of the area. It is to be noted that the leopard that had already roamed the forests of Chennimalai was captured by the forest department and the leopard that was trapped in the wire fence and died.
