Work on preparing study report on bio-mining project at Vellalore Garbage Depot intensified

Coimbatore: Work on preparing study report on bio-mining project at Vellalore Garbage Depot has been intensified. There are 100 wards in Coimbatore Corporation. These wards collect 800 to 1,000 tons of garbage daily.

All the garbage is dumped in a corporation-owned 650-acre landfill in Vellalore. In one part of the landfill, 9 lakh metric tons of unsorted garbage is stored in an area of 60 acres. The dumpyard gives out a strong stench in the area and is infested with flies. The corporation decided to dispose of this waste by bio-mining. The project was prepared at a cost of Rs 60 crore.

The project is being implemented by a private organization and team led by Anna University Professor Kurien Joseph was called in to measure the amount of garbage piled up at the Vellalore landfill and what kind of garbage was piled up. They have been working for the past two weeks to measure the garbage that has accumulated here with the help of modern cameras and technology fitted to the drone camera. Work is currently in progress to prepare a study report on this.

Corporation officials said, "The amount of garbage has been surveyed by a drone camera at the Vellalore garbage depot. The work of preparing the study report is in progress and after the submission of the study report, the task of destroying it through bio-mining will begin. This will reduce the amount of garbage that is accumulated."
