Auto driver self-immolates after being booked for dispute in public place
Coimbatore: Auto driver self-immolating after being booked bby the police for dispute in public place has caused a stir.
Shauqat Ali (32), a native of Gandhi Nagar, Pillaiyarpuram, next to Coimbatore Sundarapuram, is married and has 3 sons. Shauqat Ali was involved in a drunken brawl with another auto driver Satish at an auto stand in Vellalore yesterday evening.
Upon information Podanur police took Shauqat Ali and his auto to the station. He was later charged and fined by the police for disturbing the public. His auto was confiscated and the police asked him to come today to pick the auto as he Shauqat Ali was drunk. After leaving the police station, Shauqat Ali returned to the police station at around 8 pm with a petrol can in his hand. He poured it on himself and self-immolated and started running around the station.
A policeman on duty at the time rescued him and admitted him to a private hospital in Sundarapuram. There he was given first aid. Shauqat Ali, who later suffered a 60 per cent burn, was transferred to another private hospital. There he is being treated intensively. Top officials are conducting a serious investigation into the incident with the police on duty. The incident in which an auto driver caught fire at the premises of Podanur police station has caused a great stir in the area.
