Work to ascertain volume of piled up garbage in Vellalore dumpyard completed: Report to be submitted soon

Coimbatore: Prior to the implementation of the bio-mining project in Vellalore dumpyard here to reduce the heaped up garbage, the process of ascertaining the volume of piled up garbage and its nature using drone have been completed.

A special team from Anna University led by Peofessor. Kurien Joseph arrived to Coimbatore to analyse the decade of piled up garbage at one part of the sprawling 600 acre plus dumpyard which has been a menace for the residents in the area

The team using drone camera started work last week which lasted for 3 days. The works have now been completed and formulation of study report is in progress, a Corporation official said.

There are 100 wards in Coimbatore Corporation. These wards collect 800 to 1,000 tons of garbage on a daily basis and dump it at the Vellalore dumpyard, the 650-acre landfill owned by the City Corporation.

In one part of the landfill, 9 lakh metric tons of non-graded garbage is stagnant. The garbage creates a strong stench in the area and is infested with disease spreading flies.

The Corporation has planned to dispose the wastes through bio-mining process estimated at a cost of Rs. 60 crore. The project is being implemented by a private organization. For this, a team led by Anna University Professor Kurien Joseph was called in to measure the amount of garage piled up at the Vellalore landfill and to access what kind of garbage was piled up.

They were involved in measuring the garbage that had accumulated here with the help of modern cameras and technology fitted to the drone camera. Currently, these works are completed.

Corporation officials said, "The task of surveying the amount of garbage with a drone camera at the Vellalore landfill has been completed. Currently, the Anna University team is working on the final study report,”
