Coimbatore: Responding to the allegation filed by Kovai Marx of Tamil Puligal Katchi alleging of the untouchability wall being re-built at Nadur Village in Mettupalayam, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes has issued a summon to the Coimbatore District Collector and the Superintendent of Police, seeking explanation.
Coimbatore: Responding to the allegation filed by Kovai Marx of Tamil Puligal Katchi alleging of the untouchability wall being re-built at Nadur Village in Mettupalayam, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes has issued a summon to the Coimbatore District Collector and the Superintendent of Police, seeking explanation.
The summon read 'Whereas a Petition/Complaint/Information has been received by National Commission for Scheduled Castes from Kovai.Marx dated 21.11.2020 as enclosed and the Commission has decided to investigate /inquire into the matter in pursuance of the powers conferred upon it under Article 338 of the Constitution of India.'
The commission has requested the Collector and the SP to submit facts and information and the action taken on the allegation/matters to the undersigned within 15 days of the receipt of this notice either by post or in person or by any other means of communication.
The summon also noted that in case the Commission does not receive reply from the Collector within the stipulated time, the Commission may exercise the powers of Civil Courts conferred on it under Article 338 of the Constitution of India and issue summons for his appearance in person or by a representative before the Commission.
On December 2019, 17 people lost their lives in Nadur Village in Mettupalayam after an alleged untouchability wall by a house owner named Suvasubramaniam collpased on the houses during a rainy night. After protests by Tamil Puligal Katchi and other opposition parties, the man was booked under various sections and later released on bail.
However, the man has now built another wall at the same place and informed that he had sought permission from the municipality for raising the wall within his land. However, the people who were living in their patta houses were not allowed to live there citing safety issues.
The rebuilding of the wall has irked many in the area and the members of the Tamil Puligal Katchi who have claimed it as a threat against the down trodden people by the upper caste.
