Coimbatore: In a much commendable and thoughtful initiative by NGO Siruthuli in memory of late playback singer SP Balasubramaniyan, the initiative to set up 'SPB Vanam' by planting various species of tree saplings was kick started at Perur Pachaapalayam, today.
Coimbatore: In a much commendable and thoughtful initiative by NGO Siruthuli in memory of late playback singer SP Balasubramaniyan, the initiative to set up 'SPB Vanam' by planting various species of tree saplings was kick started at Perur Pachaapalayam, today.

Actor Vivek, MLA Ettimadai Shanmugam of Kinathukadavu constituency, Managing Trustee of Siruthuli, Vanitha Mohan, volunteers and fans of SPB gathered with zeal to plant 74 saplings today to mark the age of the veteran singer SPB.

An area of 1.8 acres owned by the Perur Chettipalayam Panchayat was ear-marked to plant tree saplings like rosewood, red sandalwood, neem, silver oak, pungai, vengai, teak and other varieties whose wood will be later used to make musical instruments. The saplings were planted in a design like musical notes.

Actor Vivek, an ardent follower of late Former President APJ Abdul Kalam who was intrigued by the idea of planting trees to reduce global warming commended the initiative of NGO Siruthuli as 'very thoughtful'.

Later, speaking to reporters, Actor Vivek recalled the achievements of late famed playback singer SPB. People across the globe were attracted by SPB's thousands of songs. SPB Vanam is a one-of-a-kind fitting tribute to the music veteran. The initiative by Siruthuli to set up SPB Vanam is highly appreciable, he lauded. The actor also praised the idea of using the wood from the trees to make musical instruments, in the future.

Actor Vivek, while addressing the audience and press created awareness on the benefits of planting saplings. He requested the public to develop the habit of planting saplings and contribute to increase the green cover. The actor also in his address motivated the younsgters to face the challenges in life and stressed that suicide is not a solution for any problem.
When questioned on his support for actors who have started political parties, the actor said, "I am one among the public" and added that his focus is towards achieving the mission of planting more saplings.
MLA Ettimadai Shanmugam presented a cheque of Rs 10,000, as a donation for maintaining the SPB Vanam and informed that the AIADMK government has been very involved in desilting and rejuvenating water bodies across the State.

Besides plants, the 1.8 acres SPB Vanam inaugurated today will also have a cricket turf, library and parks, the organisers said. Vanitha Mohan, Managing Trustee of Siruthuli thanked Minister for Municipal Administration, SP Velumani for rendering support for green initiatives in the city.
