The Nilgiris: Tense moments prevailed in Ooty and Kotagiri bus stand area on Wednesday after AIADMK cadres burnt the effigy of DMK Nilgiris MP A. Raja.

Condemning the act and alleging that the police allowed the AIADMK cadres burn the effigy, the DMK cadres led by DMK Union Secretary Kannan, raised slogans and entered into a tussle with the police and AIADMK cadres.

Recently, CM Edapadi Palanisamy alleged DMK of corruption charges in the 2G spectrum case. Replying to the allegations, DMK Deputy General Secretary and Nilgiris MP A. Raja slandered Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa and current Chief Minister, Edappadi Palanisamy of corruption and challenged the CM, to debate with him in the assembly and prove him guilty in the 2G case.

It may be recalled that in 2018, a special court acquitted both Former Telecom Minister A Raja and DMK MP Kanimozhi and all other accused in the politically-sensitive 2G spectrum allocation scam which held that the prosecution “miserably failed” to prove the charges.

The heated statements by MP A Raja and the CM irked the cadres of the respective parties. Following this, the AIADMK cadres today gathered at the Kotagiri bus stand and burnt the effigy of MP A Raja. Knowing it, the Nilgiris DMK cadres also gathered there and alleged that the police had permitted the AIADMK to burn the effigy.

This caused a tussle between the DMK and the AIADMK cadres.
