The farmers of the Thirumoorthy Dam are now objecting the water that is to be released to the Upparu Dam
Coimbatore: The Public works department of Dharapuram had earlier decided to release water from the Thirumoorthy Dam to Upparu dam which is now objected by the farmers of Thirumoorthy Dam.
Government Officials like PWDSupervising Engineer Muthusamy, Executive Engineer J Gopi, Thirumoorthy Reservoir Planning Committee Head Medical Paramasivam, Dharapuram DSP Jayaraman, Thasildar Ramalingam and 100 other farmers met at the Parambikulam-Aliyar planning office for a detailed discussion.
During the discussion Medical Paramasivam, Head of the Thirumoorthy Reservoir Planning Committee said " The rains in the area have decreased in recent years and a situation has now come up where the lands near Thirumoorthy Dam are all dried up with not enough water for irrigation. In this situation requesting to open water to Upparu Dam is not the best solution."
Further speaking he also said that water from the Thirumoorthy Reservoir can be opened during heavy rains where the excess water from the dam can be opened to the Upparu Dam for irrigation. He also said that since that's not the condition now water from the dam should not be opened
BAB Plan Supervisor Engineer Muthusamy said that water from the Thirumoorthy Reservoir should be released to various zones which makes the water capacity below 3 TMC. Since the Northeast monsoon was not heavy as expected the idea of releasing water for Upparu Dam is not possible.
