Even though the total number of Covid positive cases are under control, the healthcare experts, fear surge in cases with the re-opening of educational institutions next week.
Speaking to Simplicity, Dean of Salem Government Super Speciality Hospital Balaji Nathan, said that as the cases are fluctuating, he could not certainly say if Covid situation has retreated.
“Though the cases have been controlled carelessness by the people roaming without masks and social distancing is alarming. Decline in cases doesn't imply that we can be careless ans resume to normalcy. If the positivity rate is below 3% it implies that people have gained herd immunity. Until, people are vaccinated, flouting Covid norms can lead to a second wave."
With 2,300 tests being done in Salem on a daily basis, an official, who wish to remain anonymous, said that the cases might increase in rural areas, compared to urban. He also disclosed that recently, Mettur in Salem district has been witnessing a slight increase in cases. A team is closely monitoring the region, to control the spread, he added.
Mass testings at crowded places like bus stands, railway station among other places have also been ramped up, told the official. Amid all this, the most consoling news is the constant hike in recovery rates, the official noted.
As of yesterday, Salem district reported 75 new Covid-19 positive cases and 82 discharges. And, 511 patients are currently under treatment and 30,166 patients have been reported to have infected with Covid-19, till date. And, 444 people have lost their lives to Covid-19 in the district.
