Coimbatore: Manufacturers of coir production are suffering as the market and sales for coir ropes are declining in Pollachi due to the arrival of plastic ropes. More than 150 families in rural areas such as Kappalangarai, Tamaraikkulam and Vadakkipalayam near Pollachi are involved in the production of coir from coconut fiber, who then send it for sales in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts. Of these, more than 25 families livelihoods in the Thamaraikulam area depend on the coir industry. In general, everyone in the family are involved in the production of coir rope together.

According to the manufacturers, the coir industry has been weakening due to the six-month lockdown along with rising coconut fiber prices and the increase in the arrival of plastic coir. Over time, those engaged in the production of coir rope received 30 kg of coir fiber for INR 600 are now priced INR 1,000 for the same. The manufacturers also said that the revenue from coir rope was not as high as earlier times and that the production of coir Pollachi has been heavily affected due to rains.

The manufacturers have also demandedthe Tamil Nadu government to take necessary action to save the coir industry, which has been weakening for the past six months. Since there was no temple festivals, political party ceremonies and non-large-scale celebrations due to lock down, the coir manufacturing industry has hit hard both in terms of production and sales.
