230 newborns delivered safely at ESI Hospital during Covid-19, Dean Nirmala said.
Coimbatore: As many as 230 babies have been delivered safely at the ESI hospital in Coimbatore, since Covid-19 outbreak. Out of which, four babies were tested positive for Covid at birth, as their mothers were tested positive as well, said Nirmala, Dean, ESI Hospital.
She added that 24/7 observation and follow up by a dedicated team of health experts helped those babies recover soon and get discharged along with their mothers.
As of now, the ESI hospital is equipped with 65 beds in the pregnancy ward. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported among the infected pregnant mothers in the hospital, the Dean noted.
“There have not been any cases where the Covid positive delivered mothers complained of recurrence of symptoms after treatment. Even those pregnant women who were tested positive had only minimal symptoms like fever and body ache. While few others complained of shortness of breath", the Dean said.
A ten-member team of health experts were assigned exclusively to take care of the pregnant women and new born with Covid-19. However, as per the protocol post delivery, the mothers were advised to remain under medical observation for a couple of days, she added.
When questioned, if Covid positive mothers can breastfeed the babies, Dean Nirmala said "Of course, the mothers can breastfeed the babies. Breast milk is the best nutrition for the baby to guard and combat illnesses. However, the mothers should mandatorily wear properly covered face masks. As they could spread the virus to the infant through tiny droplets that spread when they talk, cough, or sneeze."
