Tirupur: Public protest against construction of SIPCOT in Avinashi.
Residents of Tirupur district besieged the district collector's office and staged a sit-in protest against the construction of SIPCOT industrial park in 846-acre at the Avinashi panchayat. The Government of Tamil Nadu has decided to set up a SIPCOT Industrial Park on an area of about 846 acres in the three panchayats of Thattanur, Pulippar and Panchai Thamaraikulam under the Avinashi Panchayat Union of Tirupur District. Following this, the people of the area, who are aware of the ongoing land acquisition process protested against it.
Public submitted their petition to the Avinashi MLA office, Tahsildhar and today after obtaining signatures from the public in tehy met the District Collector to file a petition and were engaged in a darna struggle at the entrance of the District Collector's Office insisting that the petition be submitted directly to the District Collector to stop construction of the SIPCOT industrial park.

Public are protesting against the project as the 846-acre SIPCOT Industrial Park is built on the Athikadavu - Avinashi project which will affect their agricultural lands in the area and lead to groundwater depletion.
