Coimbatore: MLA N.Karthik MLA questioned in a press release as to why no action has been taken to demolish the dilapidated houses in housing unit to build new houses.

Coimbatore: MLA N.Karthik MLA questioned in a press release as to why no action has been taken to demolish the dilapidated houses in housing unit to build new houses. He accused that “the AIADMK government has not taken any action to demolish and build houses for the people and has belittled the struggles of DMK and public. The government has slipped away from its duty. There are 960 flats of Tamil Nadu Housing Board in Coimbatore Corporation Singanallur Block, 64th Circle built in 17.55 acres in Housing Unit area near Uzhavar Sandhai. These houses were built by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board about 30 years ago and were bought by people with money.”

He accused that “the AIADMK government's substandard construction has made the buildings completely damaged in such a short period of time. The government must take full responsibility for this as the people in this apartment have lost their livelihood and are suffering without knowing where to go. I have repeatedly stressed the need to give am alternative to the people here in all financial session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly held in the last two years and in 2016 and 2017 during question time.

I spoke in the Assembly's Finance Status Meeting held on 14.06.2018 and said that these houses are in a dilapidated condition and the Government of Tamil Nadu should immediately make alternative arrangements for the accommodation of these people and ensure measures for their livelihood.”

He said that Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam said, "There is no place for the government to carry out maintenance work after handing over the houses through the Housing Board as per the rules." and when MLA N. Karthik asked, "Will the government subsidize the construction of houses for the occupants of these flats?" the Deputy Chief Minister replied, "There is no place according to government regulations."

He said last 04.12.2019 he submitted a petition to the District Collector that these apartments may collapse any time and to prevent any untoward incident arrangements have to be made to provide temporary housing for these people in the same area, as well as the old dilapidatedbuildings must be demolished and new good quality houses must be built on the same site and provided to the people. He also added that on 13.12.2019, a huge protest was held on behalf of the DMK, mobilizing thousands of people to attract the attention of the Government of Tamil Nadu. He said he has been fighting and emphasizing this for four consecutive years since 2016.

He further added that “after the protest on behalf of the DMK on 13.12.2019, on 15.12.2019 Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, visited the housing unit and inspected it.Houses will be demolished and new houses will be built if the occupants surrender their houses to the housing unit soon. Even after almost a year since the announcement was made by the Minister O. Panneer Selvam no action has been taken despite the letter of acceptance by the occupants.”

He said this is “another example of how the state is completely dysfunctional and paralyzed. On behalf of the Coimbatore East District DMK, I strongly condemn it.” DMK MLA N. Karthik in his press release insisted that the government must immediately demolish and rebuild the housing unit and also provide temporary accommodation to the residents until then.
