CMCH continues to be on high preparedness despite lower number of cases - CMCH Dean

Coimbatore: Besides decline in COVID-19 patient inflow, CMCH makes no change in preparedness and is on high alert to combat any surge in cases. Dean of CMCH said it is because they are being prepared for any surge in cases that might come up in the coming weeks. Hence we don’t want to reduce or make changes.” With the fresh Covid cases in the city continuing to deteriorate even after the festival times, the number of positive patients admitted in the Covid ward in Coimbatore Medical College Hospital have also declined.

While this has been the same picture in all the hospitals across the state with less positive cases, few hospitals including Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai have begun to retain the beds and blocks in the Covid wards. The step to retain beds and blocks came just after the days when cases continue to decline. Following the same, the Government Super Speciality Hospital in Salem have also increased the COVID-19 blocks to one from three. With the active cases 98 as on Monday, the inflow of Covid patients reduced 10% the doctors deployed at covid wards in Salem has decreased to 72 from 140, according to dean Balajinathan. However, it is the opposite in Coimbatore Medical College Hospital even though the cases continue to decline steadily.

When asked why the hospital retained all blocks and beds at Covid wards and didn’t make them available for other treatment sections such as general, paediatric, orthopaedic etc, Dean Kalidas, said that there are beds and blocks available at other medico sections for treatment and added that fearing increase in cases he doesn’t want to make any changes. However, the inflow of Covid patients at CMCH stood between 40-50% and thus the blocks, beds can be retained. The total number of blocks allocated for Covid patients in CMCH is eight, including blocks in ICU, OP, Old Ortho, and SARI.

With 216 beds occupied at present in the total number of 555 beds available in the hospital in Covid wards, 114 patients are positive and 102 are under suspicion of having symptoms at present. While this clearly shows that with very few patients the hospital can make use of beds and reduce doctors deployed at COVID wards, the dean cited that no orders from the top officials in the government is another possible reason for not reallocating. Health experts opine that in line with this, the hospital must provide some respite to the doctors deployed at Covid wards by reducing the numbers or creating more shifts.
