Coimbatore: Petition to the Collector demanding construction of Manimandapam for the Tamils who lost their lives during the anti-Hindi struggle in Pollachi.
In 1965, anti-Hindi protests took place in various parts of Tamil Nadu. During the protest, shootings took place in Pollachi, Tiruppur and Kumarapalayam and many Tamils were killed in this. During the language struggle, many of the martyrs who were shot have memorials and mandapams placed in their hometowns. Hundreds of Tamils were shot dead by the Indian Army during the February 12, 1965 protests in Pollachi.
No mandapam or memorial has been erected to commemorate the martyrs. The petition was filed at the Pollachi Collector's Office on behalf of the Mozhippor Ninaivu Kootamaippu that a memorial hall should be set up at the Pollachi taluk office premises to commemorate the martyrs who made historical significance for the Tamil language and for Pollachi.
