National Child Labor Abolition Program: Welfare assistance for children in Special Schools pending and glitches in enrolling new students

Coimbatore: There have been issues in enrolling new students as the assistance for children in schools implemented under the National Child Labour Abolition Program have been outstanding for more than a year.

The National Child Labour Abolition Program is being implemented on behalf of the Central Government to rehabilitate child labourers who have been rescued from various places, including factories and farms, in order to eradicate child labour. Special schools are functioning across the state under this scheme

There are 17 schools functioning in Coimbatore district. Children rescued by National Child Labor Abolition Program officers are enrolled in special schools and educated. After two years of education in special schools, they are enrolled in their developmental classes at nearby government and government-aided schools. The children thus rescued will receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 400 which were paid into the children's bank accounts. It was for this welfare assistance that some parents sent their children to school.

Across Tamil Nadu, the incentive has not been paid since March 2019. This has led to issues in enrolling new students. According to the National Child Labor Abolition Project, children are rescued every year by inspecting potential employment sites, including factories, brick kilns and farms. Only a few parents agree to enroll their rescued children in special schools and some do not immediately agree.

They agree to send their children to special school only when they are informed that they will be offered various special benefits, including a monthly financial assistance and a scholarship to higher education. But the assistance provided to students has not been given since March 2019 and no details were given for discontinuing. Officers said they arent able to give parents a proper response and it was not possible to enroll new students
