Coimbatore: While the Covid-19 outbreak still makes a big impact in the overall passenger movements, Coimbatore airport is witnessing a steady growth every month in passenger footfall. This has given hope that soon things will return to normal.
Coimbatore International Airport is one of the important airports in Tamil nadu which caters to the aviation needs of people from surrounding seven districts. Yearly on an average 30 lakhs of passengers use the domestic and international service provided at the airport.
Post Covid-19 outbreak, things had turned upside down since passenger movement literally reduced to 4,500 during May 2020. But the positive fact is that every month the passengers footfall continue to increase steadily.
As per the official data issued by Airports Authority of India at Coimbatore airport during May 2020 totally 4,511 passengers used the airport. 28,314 passengers travelled in June, 30,644 in July, 44,786 in August, 66,792 in September, and now in October it has further increased to 76,470.
While many airlines continue to cancel some of their services, this data gives a bit of hope that soon things will return to normalcy which would help to witness more flights operated every day.
Coimbatore International Airport Director, R Mahalingam said, "Before 'Covid-19' outbreak, the yearly passengers movements at the airport was 3 Million. Post Covid-19 outbreak only domestic flights are operated and hence when we see from that prespective now the overall passengers footfall continues to increase each month from just 4,500 during May to 76,470 during October. This is a very good sign and gives us hope that we would reach the normal passengers footfall which was witnessed before 'Covid-19' outbreak very soon."
