Bank Employees Strike hits transactions worth Rs 1,000 crore in Coimbatore district

Coimbatore: In Coimbatore district, close to Rs. 150 crore worth of transactions has been estimated to have taken a hit due to the one day strike by various trade unions including bank employees.


Coimbatore: In Coimbatore district, close to Rs. 150 crore worth of transactions has been estimated to have taken a hit due to the one day strike by various trade unions including bank employees.

A one-day nation-wide strike was observed on Thursday on behalf of all trade unions across India, condemning the central government for enforcing anti-farmer laws, cancellation of new pension plan, to fill vacancies, collect unpaid loans among other demands.

Around, 2,500 bank employees of 250 branches of the Bank Employees Union in Coimbatore district joined the strike.However, the Members of the Bank Employees Union have clarified that the bank officials' union did not take part in the strike and only the employees union had participated.

Though the banks were open, banking activities took a hit owing to which close to Rs 150 crore worth of transactions were affected in banks across Coimbatore district.

A similar strike took place yesterday on behalf of the Coimbatore District LIC and the General Insurance Employees Union. In Coimbatore district in which 800 LIC employees of 20 branches and 500 general insurance employees of 25 branches boycotted work.

Like the banks, the insurance offices were open however due to lack of employees, works relating to payment of premiums and new policies registrations were gravely affected up to Rs 50 lakh.

Union executives Gopalakrishnan, Gajendran, Tulsidharan and others took part in the protest in front of the LIC divisional office on Trichy Road, Coimbatore. As Coimbatore district income tax department employees also joined the strike, works were affected atIncome Tax offices in Coimbatore and Pollachi.

Many higher officials of the union wore black badges and were on duty. But many others,Madhusudhanan, Coordinating Secretary, Income Tax Department Employees' Unions, Coimbatore Branch President, G.S. S. Rajeswari, Commodity Secretary Ramesh, Union Treasurer Rajkumar and many others were present in the dharna protest that took place in front of the Income tax office in Race Course, yesterday.
