MLA N. Karthik accuses Minister SP Velumani for not providing basic protective equipment to sanitary workers

Coimbatore: DMK MLA N. Karthik has accused Minister SP Velumani for negligence in providing basic protective for sanitary workers working in Coimbatore Corporation.



Coimbatore: DMK MLA N. Karthik has accused Minister SP Velumani for negligence in providingbasic protective for sanitary workers working in Coimbatore Corporation.

The Singanallur legislator during his visit on Friday morning to Porikadai Santhu area of 39th ward, Peelamedu, here has seen sanitary workers clean sewers with bare hands without any adequate safety equipments like mask, gloves and shoes.

Citing the judiciary orders urging to provide safety equipments to sanitary workers, MLA Karthik said that working in such unsafe conditions makes the sanitary staff vulnerable to various infections. Cleaning with bare hands, increases the risk of disease causing germs entering through their nails and skin, which can lead to various conditions like anemia and complicated skin diseases.

"Despite repeated complaints and awareness, the plight of sanitary workers in Coimbatore Corporation remains to be in a pitiable state. The callous administration of theCity Corporation, under the leadership of Minister SP Velumani pays no heed to the safety and health of the sanitary workers who are risking their lives during auch pandemic times", MLA Na Karthik accused.

He also alleged that the district administration and the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation, headed by Minister SP Velumani, have abandoned the sanitary workers, like orphans. I stead, sanitary workers deserve due respect and their health should not be compromised, he added.

The MLA has requested the Corporation to ensure sanitary workers are provided with adequate safety equipments at all times, while engaging them in any sort of cleaning work.
