Coimbatore: Municipal Commissioner inaugurated the dredging of Akkamalai Dam, which the primary source of drinking water in Valparai. Valparai in Coimbatore district has more than 10,000 houses and more than a thousand businesses.

The source of drinking water for these is the dam water coming from the Akkamalai grassland near Karumalai. From here it is piped to the drinking water tank at Valparai via natural force and distributed. This dam though has not been dredged for several years.
Hence the municipal administration started the task of dredging the dam today. Valparai Municipal Commissioner Dr. Pavunraj performed Bhoomi Puja and inaugurated the work today. The commissioner said that there is a need to clear the sludge within the dam areas, increase the height of the dam and implement a drainage scheme in front of the dam.
Water is supplied directly to the town of Valparai through a pipe from the river to ensure that the water supply is not affected. The commissioner said the work would be completed within two months
