Coimbatore: Selvam runs a vegetable wholesale shop in a garden near the Vandikaran section near Thondamuthur in Coimbatore. It is customary for people from the surrounding villages to bring vegetables from their fields to this shop and sell them.
Those vegetables are transported from there to many places. Those who worked in this mandi left as usual yesterday stacking tomatoes and pumpkins in a box outside the shop. At midnight, a lone wild elephant entered the shop and trampled on the tomatoes and pumpkins stacked in the boxes.
Later, the boxes of manure kept there were dispersed and damaged by the elephant. Employees who came to work this morning were shocked to find shop supplies scattered around and informed the forest department. Foresters rushed to the scene and are investigating.
According to the people of the area, “There has never been an elephant movement in this area. However, at present, there is an increase in the movement of this lone elephant in the hillside villages, including Kuppepalayam. Even yesterday the elephant killed an old woman.
That elephant is just damaging the stuff in this store. Subsequently, elephant should be tranquilised and let in to the dense forest. It will be helpful if foresters are engaged in intensive patrolling at night.”
