Chennai: Second in a row this year, the Bay of Bengal will see its second Severe Cyclone of the year, 'Nivar' after Super Cyclone Amphan formed in May. After cyclone Gaja in 2018, this will be the second cyclone to cross Tamil Nadu in the last two years.

The cyclone is expected to further gain strength into a severe Cyclone category (90 to 100 km/hr gusting to 110 km/hr) by Wednesday.
Further, the depression over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into deep depression and lay centred around 480km southeast of Chennai at 5.30pm on Monday.
According to S Balachandran, Deputy Director General Of India Meteorological Department (IMD). It is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 12 hours and into a severe cyclonic storm during subsequent 24 hours.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edapadi K Palanisamy has issued a slew of directives to the officials to ensure safety of the people while the cyclone crosses and subsequent rains. The CM has urged people not to venture out in vehicles unless for emergency situation. Directives have been issued to fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea.
Six teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) would camp in Cuddalore and two teams in Chennai with adequate machinery, infromed the CM.
He also advised people to keep their important documents like aadhaar, driving licence, voters ID, passport, ration card, bank passbooks, education certificates and property documents, safely. Also, ensure availability of essentials like torches, adequate batteries, candle, medicines and match boxes to be used in case of an emergency, the CM said.
As gusty winds can pull down trees and electric poles, public are advised not to go near power transmission lines, electric poles, transformers and take caution while handling electric equipments like switches at home, the VM has advised. People are advised to store sufficient waters in tanks and stock essentials.
The monitoring officers in the rank of IAS officers have camped at Pudukkottai, Nagapatatinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Villupuram and Chengalpet districts and ensure implementation of all precautionary measures along with a team of multi-disciplinary rescue teams from revenue, municipal administration, fire and rescue services, TANGEDCO, PWD, highways and health. Adequate number of earth movers, trucks, tree cutting tools, sand bags are kept in place to clear debris during and after the cyclone has passed.
TANGEDCO should keep 1,000 additional personnel and get additional electric poles, transformers and power conductors from other districts to the districts that are ear-marked to be affected, the CM has informed. Importantly, sanitizers, masks should be kept ready at all relief centres, Police and Revenue officials have to monitor to prevent crowding, he added.
Greater Chennai Corporation which has 15 zones has instructed its zonal officials to keep at least five relief centres ready at each zone.
