Post 'Covid-19' outbreak, Indigo becomes first base flight in Coimbatore but will not get VAT Exemption on Aviation fuel
Coimbatore: Post 'Covid-19' outbreak, Indigo flight operated between Coimbatore and Mumbai becomes the first base flight. But still this flight would not be eligible in getting the VAT exemption on aviation fuel announced by the state government.
Before the 'Covid-19' outbreak, Coimbatore international airport was witnessing a good growth both in the passengers and cargo movements. Considering the welfare of the passengers and various representations submitted by welfare associations, Tamil Nadu government announced 28% VAT exemption on 'AVIATION FUEL' for base flights. Following this announcement, Jet Airways halted 3 flights during the night times at Coimbatore international airport. After Jet Airways withdrew all its services, Indigo airlines was halting two flights during the night time at the airport. After the 'Covid-19' outbreak, in spite the domestic flight services have resumed, the airlines did not show interest to add a base flight. Recently Indigo airlines took an initiative to halt one of its flights which operated between Coimbatore - Mumbai.
Coimbatore International Airport, Director, R.Mahalingam said,"Indigo Airlines started its Base flight operation from yesterday( November 22). Actually they decided to start it from Today(November 23), but they have postponed their decision and started halting their base flight from Sunday night at the Coimbatore international airport. In spite they halt one of their flights during the night, the airlines will not be able to get the VAT exemption. As per the rules, base flight should land at Coimbatore airport after 11:00 pm and should start its service the next day before 7:00 am. At present this base flight is landing before 11:00 pm and starting the service the next day before 7:00 am. Hence based on the landing timing, this flight would not be eligible to get VAT exemption."
He added that, "At present the passengers movements and flight movements have not resumed to normal. Once it picks up, this base flight would start its operations to Chennai or Bengaluru once it lands after 10:00 pm. This will help passengers to get another late night service and also the flight would land at Coimbatore airport after 11:00 pm for halt which would help the airlines to become eligible for VAT exemption."
