Coimbatore: Pudhukaadu dam, one of the main water bodies in the Boluvampatti region has been exploited and is under environmental damages after when the carelessly discarded plastic and alcohol bottles float on it. This dam is no exception as every other dam in the region has also become a dumping yard, says Manikandan, an water body activist and a founder of Kovai Kulangal Pathukapu Amaippu, when cleaning the dam on Monday.

“I was terrified to see the number of liquor bottles and plastic wastes floating on the dam when our team visited the dam to clean it. It has become a dumping yard and an abode for drunkards as bars are closed over the Covid19. Many youngsters including elders have been visiting this place to drink as the bars are closed and have been polluting the water body by throwing the wastes on it” says Manikandan.

This is the second dam in between the Noyyal river. As this is situated in the forest area, no locals here have anything to comment on and thus they have no role in polluting it. Manikandan added that animals including elephants visit this dam very often as it is the only water resources to them and with the bottles and plastics in it, the animals may even get hurt as they are hazardous.

With wastes collected yesterday weighing around one tonne, Manikandan says it requires a maximum of three days to clean the dam with this amount of wastes. He added that Kuruchi, Kuniamuthur is also under the same category. This dam is also the resource for the agricultural lands in the Boluvampatti region. However, with the lake being polluted everyday, it is unhealthy to use it, say the activists.
