Coimbatore: Elderly woman trampled to death by an elephant: Public indulge in protest demanding basic facilities. Kuppepalayam, Attikkal and Devarayapuram areas are adjacent to the Boluvampatti forest next to Thondamuthur in Coimbatore. Elephants often stray into the residential areas here. Krishnan is from Kuppepalayam Arunthathiyar Colony. His wife is Papammal (age 70). She left his home at around 6.15am yesterday to relieve herself. When she went 20 meters away from the house, she came across a wild elephant.

Papammal was shocked to see this and tried to escape from there. But in the blink of an eye, the elephant lifted Papammala by its trunk and threw her on the road and trampled her to death. She was crushed to death on the spot. Her relatives and the villagers gathered upon hearing the news,The people of the area informed the forest department who rushed to the spot along with the police and chased the elephant into the forest.

A permanent solution is immediately needed as elephants continue to roam in the area and hence the people of the area involved in a protest saying that they would not let the body be removed until then. Police led by Thondamuthur Inspector Sivakumar came to the public and held talks following the protest. Locals said that the toilet is built in the dense forest of this area and such incidents like this happen while going there and demanded that a toilet be built near the residential area.

They also added that streetlights were not lit and they must be changed. They alleged that the elephants roam freely in residential areas during the day in these areas causing them to live in fear. So they said that they need a permanent solution to this. They demanded that Boluvampatti Wildlife Officer should give them a solution for it. They continued protest causing a stir as they refused to allow the body to be removed. In another incident an elephant entered the Vathiyar garden area next to the Kuppepalayam and attacked Rani Ammal who came out of the house. Neighbors rushed her to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for treatment where she is being given intensive treatment.
