Chennai: Union Home Minister and top BJP leader Amit Shah on Saturday afternoon surprised the cadres by making an unscheduled walk on the busy road outside the airport to greet them, after he landed in Chennai for a two-day visit. He is scheduled to take part in back to back marathon meetings to strengthen BJP's presence in Tamil Nadu.

He later addressed his party workers and threw light on the strategy to be followed by BJP to crack the politically elusive state ahead of next year's assembly election and urged the cadres to work hard to ensure that the party could capture power in Tamil Nadu in the next five years.

Within hours of the announcement of the electoral alliance between the BJP and the AIADMK for the 2021 Assembly election, the Union Minister held met with senior party functionaries at a private hotel in Chennai. The meeting, which began after his official engagement at Kalaivanar Arangam in the evening, continued past 11 p.m.

The Union Minister pointed out how the party, which was previously not a major force in several States like Tripura and Bihar, was able to emerge as a ruling party, either on its own or through a coalition arrangement. He was confident of replicating the party’s success in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu during the Assembly poll next summer, and also in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, if party members worked tirelessly to strengthen the organisation, as quoted in The Hindu.

When some leaders expressed dissatisfaction over the alliance with the ruling AIADMK, he told them that the party high-command would take care of it. “You strengthen the party organisation and booth committees,” he said, as reported in The Hindu.

BJP women’s wing national president Vanathi Sriniavan told media that there would be a “coalition government” in Tamil Nadu after the poll. “The BJP will certainly be part of the government,” she said.

The Union Minister gave inputs on how party cadres must work on improving the BJP organisation and its functioning in Tamil Nadu.

In his debut visit to the state, the Home Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for projects worth over Rs 67,000 crore, including phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail, Coimbatore flyover project on Avinashi road and others.

He was received by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami, Deputy CM O Panneerselvam, senior cabinet members and BJP State President L Murugan among others.

Three additional commissioners, four joint commissioners, 16 deputy commissioners have been deployed for Amit Shah's visit to Chennai. Besides, 3,000 policemen have also been deployed for the Union minister's security. A bomb squad was also been in place.
