93 cubic feet of water per second was released from the dam. The Azhiyar Dam is the main dam of the PAP dams. 6,400 acres in the old Ayakat (please check) and 44 thousand acres in the new Ayakat are irrigated from the Azhiyar dam. Water was opened on the 18th to the Vettaikaranpudur canal in the new Ayakat area. After the canal was opened few days back, within hours, the fifth kilometer of the canal opening gave way, causing a lot of wastage of water.
The farmers immediately informed the PWD officials. The officials reached the spot, stopped the water that had been left open for irrigation and carried out repair work by placing sandbags as a temporary solution. After the repair 93 cubic feet of water per second was released from the Azhiyar dam again yesterdaythrough the Vettaikaranpudur canal.
The officials said the heavy rains in the areas around Anaimalai in the last few days has caused the breaking of canals due to excessive flow of rain water and irrigation water. The officials said the breakchhas been temporarily repaired and will be fully repaired after obtaining funds from the government.
