Centre's Smart City Ranking: Coimbatore pushed to 45th place
Coimbatore: Coimbatore has been pushed to the 45th position with a score of 48.71 in the Smart City project current ranking list released by the Central Government.
The pan-India rankings for 100 cities has been released by the Ministry Of Housing and Urban Affairs based on the progress/completion rate of Smart City projects.
Smart City project was announced in Coimbatore in 2015. In the last ranking released in February 2020, Coimbatore Corporation was ranked 23rd, however it has slipped to 45th position.
The ranking is been carried out by evaluating the use of funds allocated for the implementation of projects.
In Tamil Nadu, Salem is ranked 8th, Erode 18th and Tirupur 24th. However, Coimbatore Corporation has been pushed to the 45th position with a score of 48.71.
According to a Corporation Engineer, the smart city projects in Coimbatore are going on in full swing. A total fund of Rs 1,570 crore has been earmarked for Coimbatore's smart city project. Currently, tenders have been called for Rs 1,015 crore and work is underway.
He added that however due to the slow progress of works related to waste management and recycling of construction debris project, the rankingscould have slipped to 45th position.
