Farmers besiege Tirupur District Collector's Office complaining that water is not released properly to Vellakovil branch canal
Coimbatore: Coimbatore: Tirupur: More than 300 farmers laid siege to Tirupur Collectorate filed a petition with the district collector demanding that water be released properly to Vellakovil branch canal based on PAP rules.
According to PAP rules, water is supposed to be released in two seven-day cycles a month to the Vellakovil branch canal. However, the farmers complained that instead of 14 days, water is released for only three days.
Thus, in the context in which the farmers have planned to cultivate crops, the water available to them through Vellakovil branch canal is not even enough for the needs of cattle, They pointed out that in the early days, water was provided for 135 consecutive days with two-seven day cycles as per PAP legal provisions.
Moreover, at that time, even villages at the end of the canal had access to water without any shortage. However, at present, farmers in various placesat the beginning of the Thirumurthy Hill Canal are engaged in water theft using motors because of which people at the end of the canal don't get enough water. More than 300 farmers from Vellakovil area besieged the district collector's office in this regard, claiming that they have repeatedly petitioned the collector's office, but action has been taken.
Following this, the farmers met the District Collector and demanded that water should be released for 7 days as an initial step and that water be made available to all the villages. The farmers abandoned the siege and dispersed following assurances of immediate action from the district collector.
