Coimbatore: A breach has been detected in the Vettaikaranputhur canal of the Azhiyaru dam near Pollachi today.
6400 acres in the Old Ayacut and 44000 acres in the New Ayacut are irrigated from the Azhiyar dam, the main dam in the BAP package dams. Water was opened this morning to the Vettaikaranputhur canal in the new Ayacut area.
Then, within a few hours of the water opening and the fifth kilometer of the canal, the breach was detected. Thus, the water was stopped from entering the canal.
Subsequently, public works officials and farmers continue to inspect the affected areas.
The Vettaikaranputhur canal, which has a capacity of 5,623 acres, is currently being repaired due to the breach. A request has been made on behalf of the farmers to repair the canal soon.
