Coimbatore: Kerala authorities have released the water from Siruvani Dam as the dam's water level just reached 42.57 feet.
This has irked TN and Coimbatore Corporation authorities. The northeast monsoon is intensifying in the catchment areas of Siruvani Dam and the water level of Siruvani dam has reached 42.57 feet. The Kerala authorities have been accused of releasing the water from the dam without it reaching its full capacity.
The Siruvani Dam supplies drinking water to 36 wards and hundreds of roadside villages under the Coimbatore Corporation. The Siruvani Dam can hold 22.47 sq km of water. The dam is 49.53 feet high and 878.5 meters above sea level with a water capacity of 650 million cubic feet. The northeast monsoon is intensifying in Tamil Nadu and is also raining in the catchment areas of Siruvani Dam. But the water level of the dam has risen only at a slow pace.
According to Tamil Nadu Drinking Water Drainage Board and Corporation officials, "The water level of the dam is expected to reach full capacity as the northeast monsoon continues. But Kerala authorities are releasing the water from the dam without consulting Tamilnadu officials. About 103.08 MLT is needed for the drinking water needs of Coimbatore Corporation areas. Tamil Nadu authorities are constantly monitoring the activities of Kerala authorities and action will be taken soon."
