Coimbatore: Police have arrested two persons for smuggling explosives in a lorry carrying vegetables to Kerala via Coimbatore. Police have confiscated 7000 gelatin sticks and detonators from them.
As local body elections have been declared in Kerala, police across the State borders and checkposts have intensified vehicle inspections. On Sunday, Police led by Kerala Sub-Inspector Satish Kumar were conducting vehicular inspection near the Walayar check post when a lorry came from Salem loaded with vegetables including tomatoes.
During the inspection, the police lowered the boxes of tomatoes and checked the boxes.

It was found that gelatin sticks and detonators used to break rocks were hidden inside the boxes. Following this, the police arrested the driver of the lorry, Prabhu (30) from Thiruvannamalai and Ravi (38) from Dharmapuri.

It was revealed that gelatin sticks and detonators were illegally smuggled from Salem to Aluva, Kerala, illegally without permission.

Police confiscated 7,000 gelatin sticks and 7,500 detonators stored in 35 boxes inside the lorry.
The Police are investigating in various angles including whether the explosives were being smuggled in connection to any sabotage planned in view of local body elections in Kerala.
