According to Tirupur nature enthusiasts, these ducks breed in Central Asia and Southern Europe and visit the Indian subcontinent as winter migrants.

Birds, which usually live in the North Pole, migrate to the temperate Indian subcontinent and parts of Africa in October and November in search of prey during the winter and to escape the bitter cold. They will then return to their home country at the end of March.

The ruddy shelducks that migrate in this manner are usually found in Northern and Central India and visit Tamil Nadu very rarely. Apart from Chennai and Madurai, only a single duck has been recorded so far in the Dharapuram Nallathangal Canal in 2018, but this is the first time that a flock of 15 ruddy shelducks has been recorded in one place in Tamil Nadu.
