GST officials raid iron godowns in Coimbatore and Tirupur
Coimbatore: GST officers on Thursday raided close to 30 multiple iron godowns in Ganapathy and Chinnavedampatti areas in Coimbatore.
Based on repeated complaints of tax evasion by these companies dealing in scrap metal, a team of officers led by GST Joint Commissioner Govindaraj conducted a surprise raid on 15 iron godowns in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts, yesterday.
During the raid, the officials found that products were being dispatched from the godowns without proper billing. Authorities also raided an iron ore manufacturing company in Tirupur and found that iron had been traded for crores of rupees through fake bills.
"The raid revealed that more than Rs 5 crore of GST has been evaded by the iron traders in Coimbatore. Fake bills and evidence related to tax evasion have been seized from some godowns along with supporting documents. Only after a thorough examination of these documents, we will be able to ascertain the extent of tax fraud."
