Coimbatore: Farmers are disappointed as the price of country tomatoes has dropped from Rs. 250 for a 15-kg box to Rs.120.
Most of the country tomatoes are grown in the surrounding areas of Kinnathukadavu. Farmers harvest them and bring them to the market near the new bus stand in Kinathukadavu and auction them.
These country tomatoes are bought by a large number of traders from different parts of Kerala and Coimbatore District. Tomato yields have been on the rise due to heavy rains last month. As a result, a box of tomatoes weighing 15 kg was auctioned for as low as Rs. 100.
Following this, due to low supply in the last 3 days, the auction went up to Rs. 250. But, due to factors such as Diwali, lesser number of buyers and sluggish sales of tomatoes, 15 kg was auctioned for just Rs 120 at the Kinathukadavu market today as a result of which farmers are disappointed.
