Coimbatore: Agricultural losses force mother-in-law and daughter-in-law commit suicide; one dead
Coimbatore: In a heart-wrenching incident, a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law committed suicide, after they were unable to give up their love for farming and sell their agricultural land due to losses. While the former passed away, the 45-year-old daughter-in-law is battling for her life.
Arumugam, a farmer hails from Pongupalayam area near Karamadai in Coimbatore. He was survived by his wife Nagamani (45) and mother, Muthammal (65).
All three, ardent farmers had their ancestral property in which they had been farming for their livelihood. With Covid wreaking havoc on all sectors including agriculture, several farmers have been affected and some even committed suicide. Arumugam who was one such farmer who was allegedly affected by his agricultural losses and was forced to sell his land.
However, their family's love for farming prolonged their decision to sell the land. After a point, as they had give up agriculture and sell the land, Arumugam's mother and wife were reported to be in a depressed state and took the extreme step.
They reportedly committed by consuming poison on Wednesday night. As they both did not open their house for long hours, the neighbours fell suspicious and opened the window and found both lying in an unconscious state.
The neighbours informed Arumugam and rushed them to a private hospital in Karamadai. Not responding to treatment,Muthammal died, while Nagamani is battling for her life.
The Karamadai police have registered a case under sections 174 and 176 and are conducting an investigation.
The son who was in an inconsolablestate grieved after his mother and wife decided it was better to give up their lives than to give up agriculture.
The incident stirred the hearts of the people in the village.
