Two youngsters held for smuggling gold from Sharjah to Coimbatore; one crore worth of gold confiscated
Coimbatore:Customs officials on Thursday confiscated a total of Rs 1 crore worth of gold during an inspection. Two passengers of them was held for allegedly smuggling gold fromSharjah to Coimbatore.
Based on a tip-off, customs officials at the Coimbatore International Airport beefed up checking and all passengers from Air Arabia flight from Sharjah to Coimbatore which reached at 5.30 AM were subjected to thorough checking.
Two passengers were found to have smuggled gold in an innovative way by mixing some chemical paste with the gold and hiding it in their waist area to avoid detection through scanner. The authorities confiscated 1.2 kilograms of gold worth Rs. 66,62,000.
Similarly, gold and other goods worth Rs 46 lakh were seized from five other passengers who did not have proper documents. Hence, a total of 1 crore worth of gold was confiscated at the airport authorities on a single day.
The incident caused a stir in the airport.
