Reopening schools for classes 9-12 held off in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Tamil Nadu government has reversed its move to reopen schools from November 16 for classes 9-12 and announced they shall continue to remain closed.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu government has reversed its move to reopen schools from November 16 for classes 9-12 and announced they shall continue to remain closed. Colleges were also earlier scheduled to function from November 16 , but it has been announced now that colleges and universities shall reopen from December 2 only for research scholars and final year PG students of science and technology disciplines.

An official release from the government said. “The order on reopening schools from November 16 for classes 9-12 is cancelled. An announcement on reopening schools will be made later based on the situation.”

It is to be noted that after the TN CM said on October 31 that schools and colleges would be allowed to reopen from November 16, DMK president M K Stalin hit out at the government for its “hasty” announcement. M K Stalin also said the government should make a decision on reopening schools only in January 2021 after analysing the COVID-19 scenario.

The government said the opinion on reopening of schools was mixed and divided after consultations with parents and teachers across the state on Monday. Most of the parents are said to have expressed apprehension over starting classes since the pandemic is still prevalent and the extent to which students could adhere to COVID regulations.
